History
In the fall of 2002, Roosevelt principal Lisa Kodama convened a group of alumni, parents, and staff to discuss ways to develop a source of stable and sustainable income for Roosevelt High School.
Those discussions identified the need to re-energize the RHS Foundation to focus on gathering monies to support consistent and equitable academic access for every student; monies that would not be tied to district budgets or any individual program or administration. The non-profit Roosevelt High School Foundation began its effort to build an Endownment Fund.
Mission
The Roosevelt High School Foundation, including staff, alumni, parents and neighbors, believe in the right of all students to a quality, personalized, public education that promotes academic excellence and helps students build the necessary skills, knowledge and self-esteem to become successful life-long learners and productive citizens.
The Foundation Board is committed to providing resources to support the academic, athletic, extracurricular and enrichment needs of all students enrolled at Roosevelt High School.
Our Goal
Our goal is a Roosevelt High School Foundation endowment fund, administered by a panel of alumni, parents, teachers, and staff, organized under the auspices of the Roosevelt High School Foundation.
Roosevelt's Legacy
Many of Seattle's business, civic and cultural leaders have graduated from Roosevelt, establishing a notable legacy and reputation for excellence. As we approach the 2006 rebuilding of the physical structure of Roosevelt High School, it is important that we plan now for student and program needs that are specific to our school community.
Present Challenge
Public education is at a critical juncture. Schools such as Roosevelt face increasing competition from private schools, faith-based schools, and other public high schools. While many of us wish that local, state and federal funding provided for the needs of all public school students, the reality is that public dollars are simply inadequate.
Roosevelt has many active fundraising groups that are supported by families and friends of current students. In addition, Roosevelt students enjoy some incredible support from the RHS Golden Grads, a group comprised of alumni who have celebrated their 50th RHS reunions. We will complement, not compete with, these existing groups.
Our goal is to create support opportunities for community members and ask alumni to give financial support to RHS after they graduate, and before they reach Golden Grad status.
Vision for the Future
Roosevelt High School is currently building a strategic plan for success with the belief that all children deserve special treatment. In the summer of 2004, Roosevelt will close for a two-year remodel, reopening in 2006 with a design meant to bring the school into the new millennium.
The possibilities for enhancing the educational opportunities and resources at Roosevelt are endless. Building this fund now not only enriches the school and community, but also creates a legacy for excellence that outlasts any individual program, administration, or plan.
